I use the following one-liners for precisely this purpose (and its reverse):

alias coot2buster="sed -e 's/ \(.\)d \(.\)/  \1 \2/' "
alias buster2coot="sed -e 's/  \(.\) \([UV]\)/ \1d \2/' "
