very weird indeed: this should actually be something like

  AXIS Z X Y
  XYZL 0 1 0.0 0.0 0 1

(this is deep inside $BDG_home/bin/sharp/autoSHARP/libautoSHARP.sh).

I can't find anything wrong with the autoSHARP code/scripts (at the
moment). Could you try running the same job on a non-SGI (if you have
a licence for it)? What kind of SGI is it (old/new, up-to-date
OS?). Could there be something funny with awk?
