There is no need for a separate 'sharp' user anymore (for several
years now). You can install it under any account - however, I always
avoid installing anything crystallographic as 'root'.

Is it possible, that the $BDG_home/machines/*/ccp4.setup has a
CCP4_SCR setting like

  /tmp/sharp

(i.e. using the default CCP4 behaviour of /tmp/$USER)? And is it
possible that the directory /tmp/sharp doesn't exist?

Since I am not a big fan of this /tmp/$USER idea (that is used in CCP4
by default) we're not creating this directory if it doesn't exist. So
after a reboot of your machine this directory might have gone (one of
the reasons why I don't like it).

You could try and set CCP4_SCR to /tmp in all your
$BDG_home/machines/*/ccp4.setup files. It is possible that the FFT
program is unable to open a scratch file ...

Cheers

Clemens
